Hey Delights!

My fellow Chicago blogger boo, Dāsha of Windy City Wardrobe was gracious enough to agree to attend and review a performance of Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway in Chicago in my stead because I had to go to San Francisco for the live unboxing Stitch Fix event.

Thanks Dāsha and I can not wait to see this production myself!

Last week I was lucky enough to hang out with some blogger boos in the lounge at The Cadillac Palace Theater prior to viewing Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway in Chicago. Among the group was the production’s company manager, Michael Height, who shared his excitement for the show and asked if it was our first time attending it. Little did I know, it was a very valid question as it was so good and I definitely plan on seeing it again.

Aladdin makes every other musical I’ve seen look like an exercise in EXTREME minimalism.

It gives us a magic carpet that swoops up, down and from left to right with absolutely no
visible means of support. Then there are fireworks (lots of them), lightening, thunder and smoke
sweeping across the stage as dancers tap and tumble around sky high piles of golden
treasures.

Every time you think the genie can’t pull another thing out of his magic lamp, he
does!

This tale of a beggar who woos a princess left me feeling excited and conflicted. On one hand,
you can’t help but consider that Anthony Murphy is a man of color playing the lead role in a
show as a slave who isn’t deemed worthy enough to get a name. I don’t want to give away too
much but the genie ends up praising his master for doing something he should have done in
the first place.

But on the other hand, the genie role seems to be specifically designed to show off the myriad of
talents Murphy has as an entertainer.

The performances of all the actors enchants children and has just enough self-awareness and self-deprecating humor to keep the grown folks laughing and dancing along in their seats as it pokes fun at everything from shirtless heroes to the damsel-in-distress stereotype.

In the end, you have an unforgettable and highly entertaining show that will wow Chicagoans all
summer long.
