{Five Fab} Romantic Valentine’s Day Movies
Valentine’s Day is all about flowers, love, hearts, chocolate and romance. And romance comes in many shapes and forms and thanks to movies, it also comes with lots of laughs and fun and of course, even a few tears. I am sure that you have see a quite a few lists featuring romantic movies for Valentine’s Day but most contain a lot of the usual suspects, so I wanted to share a few of my faves that, with the exception of one, may not be that well known.
My Favorite Five – This movie is hilarious as you will see from the trailer and since the lead character has 5 very defined requirements that no one man encompasses, she dates multiple men and of course life throws a monkey wrench or two at her that ruins all her fun. Available to rent or buy or stream on Netflix.
Love Jones – You can not mention black romance movies and NOT include Love Jones. It is a classic and one that I have watched more times that I can remember but each time it feels new. Each time there is something different that I feel or see, from the music to the fashion to the ever changing dynamics of the characters. Available for purchase here for $5 and it is worth that and more. It is also on youtube but I can not vouch for the videos there, as I have not watched them.
Medicine For Melancholy – I featured this movie before and what I wrote the first time still pretty much describes how I feel about it, so I am just re-posting it. This movie is very cool…from it’s black and
white to muted color nature to the great actors…who made me
feel like i was spying on real lives and not just movie characters…
who took me back in the day when I had experienced something very similar,
minus the one night stand part ;). Available for rent or purchase and streaming on Netflix.
I Hate Luv Storys – I saw this movie way back in 2010 in a janky theater that could have ruined my entire experience but I loved every minute of it and I watch it regularly. It is so funny and the lead characters are awesome. This preview doesn’t have them but the movie does come with English subtitles. It is available for purchase and for streaming on Netflix.
My Last Day Without You – Typical romantic movie theme: two people meet and instantly connect but of course there are pitchforks in the road, including the major hand that the leading man plays in her career. I totally fell in love with this movie when I first saw it. It’s hella funny. I also love the way that Brooklyn is a supporting character in the movie. It is currently available for purchase & free Amazon Prime streaming (which I stream from my iphone to my first generation Apple tv. It also has a soundtrack full of songs by Nicole Beharie, who I didn’t even know was a singer & who can really blow. The music is pretty sweet and plays a huge part in the flow & feels of the movie.
Speaking of my Apple tv, I came across these cute skins for it and I want one but I just can’t decide if I want the weathered wood or the black walnut. What say you?
BONUS: I only posted five because that’s my list format but I had to add one that I totally love & watch often, Something New starring Sanaa Lathan and a whole slew of my fave black actors. It’s available to rent/buy or stream on Netflix.
